Abstract

This study examines children’s experiences related to digital loneliness from a social work perspective, based on children’s own narratives and parents’ observations and assessments. A qualitative descriptive design was used. The study group consisted of 20 participants: 10 children aged 13-17 and their 10 parents. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Six themes were identified: digital usage practices; digital socialization and digital loneliness; daily life, family relationships, and responsibilities; emotional and psychosocial effects; parental supervision, boundary-setting, and guidance; and professional support needs and recommendations. Findings showed that online environments helped children maintain existing friendships and feel socially connected, while some children described online relationships as superficial and reported feelings of emptiness or loneliness when disconnected. For some participants, digital use was associated with changes in sleep patterns, neglect of responsibilities, and reduced family communication. Time limits were the most common parental supervision strategy, alongside guidance, open communication, and shared activities. Participants also expressed needs for support concerning safe internet use, family and school guidance, professional assistance, and alternative social activities. Overall, it was determined that digital loneliness should be evaluated holistically beyond screen time, together with the quality of online relationships, family communication, peer relationships, and the broader social environment.
