Abstract

This study characterized systemic oxidative and antioxidant changes in sheep with clinical pneumonia. Twenty sheep diagnosed with clinical pneumonia were compared with 20 individually matched healthy controls. Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), paraoxonase-1 (PON1), arylesterase (ARE), total sialic acid (TSA), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) were assessed. Paired t tests or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used as appropriate, and the false discovery rate was controlled across nine comparisons. In sheep with clinical pneumonia, TOS, OSI, TSA, and MDA increased, whereas TAS, PON1, ARE, HDL, and GSH decreased. All differences remained significant after false-discovery-rate correction. The largest relative increase was observed for OSI (140.4%), and the largest relative decrease was observed for GSH (63.9%). The largest absolute effect sizes were found for GSH (Cohen's dz=-3.74), MDA (dz=2.06), TOS (dz=1.90), and OSI (rank-biserial r=0.83). These findings indicate that clinical pneumonia in sheep is accompanied by increased oxidant burden, lipid peroxidation, glutathione depletion, and impaired HDL-associated antioxidant defense. Combined assessment of the TAS-TOS-OSI, MDA-GSH, and HDL-PON1-ARE axes may provide a more comprehensive description of redox disturbance in ovine pneumonia.
