Abstract

This article aims to examine the perceptions of poverty among individuals living in the city of Siirt within the framework of socioeconomic and urban variables. Based on original field data that reflects the social and economic structure of Siirt, the study reveals how poverty perceptions are shaped by sociodemographic factors (gender, marital status, age, and educational attainment), socioeconomic factors (class position, employment status, income level, and income satisfaction), household-level factors (household size, housing ownership and type, housing expenditures), and urban factors (length of residence in the city, sense of urban belonging, and perception of safety in the city). The research was conducted with the approval of the Ethics Committee of xxxxxxxxx University (dated 06.05.2025, decision no. 2025/05) and is based on quantitative fieldwork involving 328 valid survey responses collected from adult residents of Siirt. The Poverty Attitude Scale developed by Doğan and Çelik (2012) was employed as the data collection instrument; exploratory factor analysis indicated that the scale had a two-dimensional structure consisting of Material Poverty and Perceived Poverty, and reliability and validity analyses supported its use in the present data set. Findings from t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses indicate that age and marital status do not produce significant differences in poverty attitudes, while gender differs only in the Material Poverty dimension, with women reporting higher scores. In contrast, educational attainment, class position, income level, income satisfaction, employment status, and housing conditions emerge as significant areas of differentiation. Household-level indicators such as housing ownership and housing expenditures are particularly associated with material poverty and overall poverty attitudes, whereas urban belonging and feeling safe in the city reduce poverty attitudes. The established regression model explains 59.1% of the variance in urban poverty attitudes (R² = 0.591). Overall, the findings demonstrate that poverty in Siirt is reproduced not only through income-related factors but also through employment quality, housing conditions, and channels of urban social capital.

Özet

Bu makale, Siirt kentinde yaşayan bireylerin yoksulluk algılarını sosyoekonomik ve kentsel değişkenler bağlamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma, Siirt’in toplumsal ve ekonomik yapısını yansıtan özgün bir saha verisi üzerinden, yoksulluk tutumunun sosyodemografik (cinsiyet, medeni durum, yaş ve eğitim durumu), sosyoekonomik (sınıfsal konum, çalışma durumu, gelir düzeyi ve gelir memnuniyeti), hane düzeyinde (hane halkı büyüklüğü, konut mülkiyeti ve tipi, barınma giderleri) ve kentsel faktörlerle (kentte yaşama süresi, kentsel aidiyet, kentte güvende hissetme) nasıl şekillendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırma, xxxxxx Üniversitesi Etik Kurulu’nun 06.05.2025 tarihli ve 2025/05 sayılı onayıyla yürütülmüş olup, kentte yaşayan yetişkinlerden elde edilen 328 geçerli anket verisine dayalı nicel bir saha çalışmasıdır. Veri toplama aracında Doğan ve Çelik’in (2012) geliştirdiği Yoksulluk Tutumu Ölçeği kullanılmıştır.
