Abstract
The process of experiencing and making sense of the connections established with the environment through the senses constitutes perception. Physical and sensory interactions have an important effect on the formation of spatial perception. As space is experienced through the senses, different emotional changes occur. This change in sensory perception diversifies and strengthens the meaning of space. Places of worship are places where individuals' spiritual and emotional experiences intensify. This research aims to evaluate the effects of the design of worship buildings on sensory experiences with a phenomenological approach. Church and chapel structures designed by architects Tadao Ando, Peter Zumthor, Kengo Kuma, Alvaro Siza and Steven Holl, who adopt the sensory experience approach in their designs and skillfully reflect the effect of this approach in their structures, were examined and how the senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste affect sensory and spatial perception as design elements were analyzed. It is analyzed how the use of spatial design elements and the senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste affect sensory and spatial perception. Literature review, visual data, designer discourses, visitor comments were analyzed by content analysis method. The parameters created were associated with the five senses and evaluated in the explanation and analysis table. The use of spatial elements and sensory effects in worship buildings in a complementary integrity activates sensory perceptions. It plays an important role in the emotional and spiritual journeys of individuals.
