Abstract

Purpose: This study examines fatigue, perceived performance deterioration, and safety-practices perceptions among aircraft maintenance and ground handling personnel and tests selected group differences. Methodology: A cross-sectional relational survey included 255 employees. Fatigue was measured with a modified nine-item Fatigue Severity Scale-based set; performance deterioration and safety-practices perceptions used two study-specific four-item sets. Sample-specific reliability and exploratory factor evidence were examined. Because scores were not normally distributed, Spearman correlation, Mann–Whitney U, and Kruskal–Wallis H tests were used. Findings: Fatigue was positively related to perceived performance deterioration (ρ = .728, p < .001; H1 supported) and weakly negatively related to safety-practices perceptions (ρ = −.156, p = .013; H2 supported). Perceived performance deterioration and safety-practices perceptions were unrelated (ρ = −.036, p = .565; H3 not supported). Fatigue differed by sector experience (H = 14.070, p = .003, ε² = .044); only the 0–3 versus 5–10-year comparison remained significant after Bonferroni adjustment. Safety-practices perceptions differed by job type (U = 8,594.00, p = .025, r = .139). Originality: The study focuses on ground-based aviation personnel and identifies a potential productivity concern without claiming to measure objective productivity or Fatigue Risk Management.
