Abstract

In this research, the validity of promises of strong employment perspectives for graduates of Turkish universities in transportation and logistics programs is investigated on the basis of the factual evidence. There are some differences among twelve programs in terms of employment percentage, time-to-first-job, and income level. Applying the official information provided by TÜİK-TURKSTAT about five bachelor's (Logistics Management; Maritime Business Administration, Aviation Management, International Trade and Logistics, Marine Transportation Engineering) and seven associate-degree (Rail Systems Operations, Transportation and Traffic Services, Civil Air Transportation Operations, Logistics, Maritime and Port Management, Marine Transportation and Operations, Postal Services) programs for the period of 2022-2025, the analysis is conducted in order to find out how realistic the promises are comparing with actual outcomes of graduates of these programs. In order to conduct the analysis, the methodology of panel descriptives, rank-stability statistics and shift-share-based reference-trend deviation is applied. Additionally, sectoral indices, such as foreign trade, port cargo movement, and air traffic are used. According to Job Matching Theory and Signaling Theory, there are some findings that most of the programs follow the general trend but there is a certain divergence in aviation-related and maritime programs. Aviation-related programs show higher improvement rate in correlation with 29.5% increase in number of flights, however, maritime programs perform poorly despite the stability or growth in port cargo movement. Marine Transportation Engineering shows the highest salary signaling but the lowest and decreasing employment rate.
