Abstract

Introduction: In the modern era of sedentary lifestyles and reduced levels of physical activity, the human body has become increasingly susceptible to a range of metabolic risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycaemia. Consequently, diabetes mellitus has emerged as one of the most significant global public health challenges. The rising global prevalence of diabetes has underscored the urgent need for the development of novel first-line therapeutic strategies. Among the proposed dietary interventions, the ketogenic diet has gained attention as a potential approach for mitigating both the incidence and severity of the disease. It has been suggested that this dietary regimen may contribute to improved glycaemic control and weight reduction, thereby facilitating metabolic regulation in individuals with diabetes. While current evidence indicates that carbohydrate restriction may lead to reductions in body weight and improvements in glycaemic control among patients with diabetes, the long-term efficacy and safety of this dietary approach require further investigation. Conclusion: This paper examines the potential role of ketogenic diets in both the pathogenesis and management of diabetes mellitus, with particular emphasis on existing evidence and ongoing controversies in the field.
