Abstract
This study was conducted to identify Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) hazards and the associated risks present in the working environments of workshop and laboratory teachers employed in Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools. Field observations, photographic records, inspection criteria derived from the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MoNE–MoLSS) guidelines, and relevant literature were evaluated collectively. Hazards encountered in welding, metal and machinery, furniture, food and beverage, information technologies, and healthcare service workshops were classified into categories including mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, fire and explosion risks, hot surfaces, chemical exposure, dust and fumes, noise and vibration, manual handling activities, prolonged sitting, deficiencies in workplace order and cleanliness and training and organizational issues. The findings indicate that welding fumes and sparks, moving machine parts, wood and metal chips, cutting equipment, transportation of large cooking vessels, hot surfaces, slippery floors, cable and storage irregularities, inadequate ventilation, and deficiencies in the use of personal protective equipment may pose significant risks to teachers, students, and support personnel. As a result of the study, a field-specific hazard and risk matrix together with practical control measures was developed and proposed. The study is intended to serve as a useful reference for school administrators, department heads, and occupational health and safety committees in the preparation of workplace safety improvement and action plans.
