Abstract
The aim of the study was conducted to examine the levels of moral decision-making and perceptions of excellent performance in sports among licensed athletes. Also, the study aimed to investigate the levels of morality and perceptions of excellent performance according to gender and sport type variables. Licensed 397 athletes participated in the study. The Moral Decision-Making Attitudes Scale in Youth Sports, The Excellent Performance in Sports Scale and a Demographic Information Form were used in the research. Results showed that female athletes had higher moral decision-making scores than male, while their perceptions of excellent performance in sports were lower; but athletes' moral decision-making and perception of perfect performance scores did not differ according to sport type. Furthermore, negative correlation was observed between athletes' moral decision-making scores and their perception of perfect performance in sports. In conclusion, this research revealed that female athletes have more positive attitudes towards moral decision-making in sports and also more likely to accept sub-perfect performances compared to males. It was found that the sport types didn’t affect moral decision-making attitudes and perceptions of excellent performance; however, the perception of excellent performance related to sports negatively affected moral decision-making attitudes. More clearly, it can be said that as athletes' perception of perfect performance increases, their tendency to make unethical decisions may also increase.
