Abstract

Background: The way pregnant women who experience pregnancy for the first time perceive pregnancy is a determining factor in the course of the process. When determining the perception of pregnancy, it will be effective to use metaphor analysis to clarify complex situations. Objectives: This study used metaphor analysis to evaluate primiparous pregnant women's perceptions about pregnancy. Methods: Using qualitative research principles, the research was conducted with 40 primiparous pregnant women living in Samsun between November 2021 and April 2022. Data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the researchers. The first part consists of 11 questions containing introductory information, and the second part consists of 2 questions containing the expression "My pregnancy is similar to…….., because………" to determine metaphors about pregnancy. SPSS 22 program was used to analyze the descriptive data. Metaphors regarding pregnancy perceptions were analyzed and interpreted in six stages. Results: The average age of the pregnant women participating in the study was 27.03±3.08, and the average week of pregnancy was 22.10±7.29. It was determined that 55% of the pregnant women in the study evaluated their health status as very good, 55% had a planned pregnancy, and 62.5% felt ready for the pregnancy process. The study found that 40 pregnant women produced 27 metaphors regarding pregnancy perception, and these metaphors were grouped under five categories (my miracle, finding meaning in life, the harmony of difficulty and beauty, a mysterious experience, and crisis caused by change). Conclusion: According to the results obtained from this research, primiparous pregnant women's perceptions of pregnancy are generally positive, although they have various difficulties.
