Abstract

Background: Rapid technological advancements have introduced innovative teaching methods and encouraged the exploration of effective learning strategies in education. Objectives: This study aims to examine, present, and evaluate smartphone applications developed for nursing education that are compatible with Android and iOS platforms. Methods: This descriptive study employed a screening method. Between January 1 and April 4, 2025, searches were conducted in mobile application stores using the keywords “Hemşire,” “Hemşirelik,” “Nurse,” and “Nursing.” A total of 609 apps were found in the Google Play Store and 662 in the Apple Store. Based on specific exclusion criteria, 31 free, up-to-date, and highly rated or frequently downloaded smartphone applications were selected for detailed analysis. Results: More than half of the applications (61.2%) focus on exam preparation, while 25.8% provide content related to fundamental nursing courses. Only 6.4% target skill development. On Google Play, My Town: Hospital and Dr. Najeeb Lectures are among the most popular, while Picmonic has the highest user rating. On the Apple Store, NurseCare, Pflege-Examen, and Erasmus Nursing received the highest ratings, with NurseCare standing out for its patient monitoring feature. Nursing Skills Lab offers opportunities for virtual skill practice. Conclusion: Most mobile apps in nursing education focus on theoretical content and exam readiness. Given the practical nature of the nursing profession, there is a clear need for applications that support clinical skills and simulation-based learning. Collaborative efforts are essential for maximizing educational benefits and fostering the development of localized nursing education apps.
