Abstract

The art as a phenomenon is observable in each society in the history. This study investigated the art history period from the Palaeolithic era to the Neoclassicism art movement in terms of the perspective of illustration visuals. The research question of the study is “How is the development of the painting art from the Palaeolithic era to the Neoclassicism art movement?” The aim of this study is to investigate the change of the painting art in the period from the Palaeolithic era that was the human started making the art first to the Neoclassicism art movement as based on the literature. This study used literature review. According to the findings, it was revealed that the first writing systems was used in the Sumerians and Egyptians as based on the picture-drawing which indicates the vital role of the painting art in the establishment of the civilizations in the history. In the antique Greek, the painters achieved to transfer the three dimension observable in the nature to the two dimension as surface as a performance of the effort to the real world, which caused the new area in the painting art. Accordingly, it can be determined that the art painting is started as a symbol by the first humans in the history, however, in the next periods; the painters had effort to transfer the three dimension figures and things in the real world towards two dimension surface as canvas. As a result, it was concluded that the change of painting art between the Palaeolithic era and the Neoclassicism had been evolved from beyond the seen and known of things drawn by the first human on the caves toward reflecting observed of the real world’s three dimension as to be two dimensions on the canvas.
