Abstract
This study aims to examine Max Reger’s Viola Suite No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 131d, composed for solo viola, from a stylistic perspective. Reger’s viola suites clearly reflect the stylistic characteristics of the Late Romantic period and hold an important place in the viola repertoire. This significance derives from their distinctive harmonic language and polyphonic writing. Viola Suite No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 131d was selected because it clearly demonstrates Reger’s stylistic approach in terms of thematic structure, chromatic density, and technical demands. Stylistic music analysis was adopted as the analytical approach. The work was evaluated in terms of formal structure, melodic and motivic development, harmonic characteristics, and rhythmic texture. Within this framework, the movements of the suite were examined through stylistic analysis and related to the overall structure in terms of contrapuntal writing, rhythmic continuity, and formal function. The analysis was conducted based on the musical score. The findings were also considered in relation to performance practice. In this context, Reger’s dense chromatic writing, contrapuntal texture, and extensive dynamic range were identified as fundamental elements of the work’s stylistic identity. The findings indicate that the musical language of the work is closely related both to the Late Romantic aesthetic and to the polyphonic thinking rooted in the tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach. These stylistic characteristics also impose significant technical and musical demands on the performer. In this respect, the study aims to contribute to a more informed and attentive performance approach to Reger’s viola suites. This approach seeks to reveal not only the local technical features of the work but also the stylistic balance and structural continuity established throughout the suite.
Özet
Bu araştırma, Max Reger’in solo viyola için bestelediği Op. 131d No. 1 Sol minör Viyola Süiti’ni stilistik açıdan incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Op. 131d No. 1 Sol minör Viyola Süiti’nin seçilme nedeni, eserin Reger’in üslubunu tematik yapı, kromatik yoğunluk ve teknik gereksinimler bakımından açık biçimde sergilemesidir.
