Abstract
This study aims to examine the reflections of the belief in the evil eye and the aqiqah sacrifice tradition, both of which hold an important place in Anatolian culture, in contemporary ceramic art. Within the scope of the research, cultural symbols associated with Anatolia were reconsidered and reinterpreted through ceramic sculptures and the cultural metaphors employed in these works. An arts-based qualitative research design, one of the approaches within qualitative research, was adopted in the study. The selected artworks were analysed in terms of their forms and the metaphors they incorporate. The findings obtained through these analyses are presented under the “Findings” section of the study. In the practice-based dimension of the research, four ceramic sculptures entitled Male Goat Aqiqah Sacrifice-Amulet, Ram Aqiqah Sacrifice-Saddlebag, Ram Aqiqah Sacrifice-Woman, and Male Goat Aqiqah Sacrifice-Life and Death were examined. The results of the study indicate that the symbols associated with the belief in the evil eye and the sacrifice tradition, which constitute significant elements of Anatolian culture, function in ceramic art not merely as decorative components but also as metaphorical signs conveying concepts such as cultural memory, protection, offering, birth, death, fertility, and belief in the afterlife.
