Abstract
Village schools constructed in rural settlements during the Republican period constitute important cultural heritage assets that reflect the educational policies, architectural approaches, and rural way of life of their time. However, the widespread adoption of the transportation-based education system and the decline in rural populations have caused many of these buildings to lose their original functions and undergo physical deterioration over time. In this context, the historical development, architectural characteristics, and current conservation condition of a two-storey timber village school in Hamzalar village, Eskipazar District, Karabük Province, were examined, and an adaptive reuse proposal was developed to support its sustainable use. The building was evaluated in terms of its historical, spatial, and structural characteristics, with particular attention given to its original plan configuration, bağdadi construction system, and distinctive architectural elements. Based on the findings, a reuse proposal was developed by considering the cultural tourism potential of Hadrianopolis Ancient City. The former village school in Hamzalar was proposed to be converted into a guesthouse, while the other buildings within the site were retained in their existing functions and considered as complementary components of the proposed new use.
