Abstract

Over more than four decades, Design Studies has done more than document design research; it has contributed to the formation of a scholarly structure that shapes which questions gain visibility, which authors become central, and which geographies participate in knowledge production. This study applies a single-journal bibliometric analysis to the journal's complete publication archive from 1979 to 2025. Using a dataset comprising all research articles published in the journal (n = 1,347 articles; 71,102 citations), the study analyses citation networks, co-authorship networks, co-citation keywords, and thematic bigrams through a Python-based analytical framework, incorporating concentration measures such as the Gini coefficient and Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI). The findings reveal three interconnected patterns: the emergence of a stable theoretical core centred on influential scholars, an unequal citation structure consistent with canon formation (Gini = 0.676; the top 10% of articles account for 14.7% of all citations; mean citations = 52.79; median = 23), and a gradual transition from individual scholarship to collaborative and institutionally embedded research production. The rise of design thinking discourse after 2011 also indicates thematic expansion into management and innovation contexts, while scholarly production remains concentrated within Western institutional centres. Drawing on Star and Ruhleder's (1996) concept of infrastructure, these patterns are interpreted as evidence of a self-reinforcing academic publishing ecosystem. The study argues that canon formation in design research functions as an infrastructural process and offers a framework linking bibliometrics with the sociology of scientific knowledge.
