Abstract
The quality of health services is directly related not only to technological equipment or clinical knowledge level, but also to effective communication processes. In this context, patient-physician communication emerges as one of the fundamental elements affecting the success of medical practices. Communication deficiencies reduce the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment processes; and can negatively affect patient satisfaction, compliance with treatment and general health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current situation in line with academic studies conducted in Turkey on patient-physician communication, to draw attention to the problems experienced and to offer solution suggestions. In this context, theses and articles on patient-physician communication in Turkey until 2024 were examined; a general assessment was made on the reasons for the difficulties experienced in communication and how these problems can be overcome. The findings revealed that not only physicians, but also patients, health managers and researchers should actively contribute to this process. It was suggested that communication skills should be increased for physicians, in-service training should be organized, appropriate working hours should be provided and material/spiritual conditions should be improved. For patients, it is important to increase health literacy and conduct awareness-raising activities. Other important suggestions include managers creating structures that support communication and researchers conducting in-depth studies on the subject. As a result, patient-physician communication is not just an individual interaction, but a multi-stakeholder and systemic process. Eliminating the disruptions in this process will contribute to the provision of more effective and humane health services.
