Abstract

Benign epithelial salivary gland tumors constitute a significant group of neoplasms occurring in the head and neck region. This review comprehensively addresses the epidemiology, etiological factors, and clinical presentation of the tumors are discussed, alongside diagnostic approaches and the role of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC). Furthermore, the new tumor types defined in the 5th edition of the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumors are also examined. Upon evaluation of treatment options, it is emphasized that the cornerstone of management for benign tumors is surgical excision with clear margins to minimize the risk of recurrence. Radiotherapy has no role in primary treatment but is limited to selected cases, such as inoperable or recurrent pleomorphic adenoma. In conclusion, the management of benign salivary gland tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach for accurate diagnosis, appropriate surgical planning, and prevention of complications. This review aims to summarize the current diagnostic and therapeutic principles for benign epithelial salivary gland tumors, providing clinicians with a comprehensive perspective.
