Abstract

Mental stress is a clinically significant psychosocial condition in coronary artery disease in both its acute and chronic dimensions. However, mental stress is often not addressed as a separate topic in standard risk assessments for coronary artery disease and therefore tends to remain in the background in clinical practice. This situation creates a gap regarding how mental stress should be assessed within clinical care for individuals with coronary artery disease. This review addresses the role of mental stress in clinical care for coronary artery disease; outlines the fundamental mechanisms of biological and behavioral responses to mental stress in the body; and presents related risk areas and assessment approaches used within nursing care in light of the literature. In addition, nursing practices for the screening and monitoring of mental stress are discussed.
