Abstract

Purpose: Natural disasters are global phenomena that cause loss of life and property worldwide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic impacts of natural disasters—particularly earthquakes—on healthcare services, to raise awareness about necessary public and societal-level measures in disaster management, and to offer policy-based recommendations. Method: This study employed qualitative research methods, specifically case study and document analysis approaches. The earthquake that occurred in Türkiye on February 6, 2023, affecting 11 provinces, was used as the primary case. The impact of the disaster on healthcare delivery was examined through qualitative data, and its economic implications were assessed using cost analysis techniques. Findings: Following the earthquake, many public and private healthcare facilities were either destroyed or severely damaged and rendered inoperable. This led to significant disruptions in access to healthcare services. The transfer of healthcare personnel, lack of coordination in the field, and interruptions in service delivery imposed both direct and indirect financial burdens on the healthcare system. Furthermore, post-disaster processes such as recovery, reconstruction, and supply procurement further escalated the economic strain. Conclusion: Although it is not possible to completely prevent earthquakes and other natural disasters, it is possible to minimize their effects and reduce economic losses. Achieving this requires a multi-level disaster management system that begins with individual awareness and is supported by institutional planning and legal regulations. Without the development of effective disaster management strategies, the economic burden on the healthcare system will continue to threaten its sustainability. Özet

Amaç: Doğal afetler, dünya genelinde can ve mal kayıplarına yol açan küresel sorunlardır.
