Abstract

Dental practices encompass not only oral and dental health but also the rehabilitation process following two complex clinical conditions characterized by pain, functional loss, and decreased quality of life: Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Head and Neck Cancers (HNC). Physiotherapy offers a significant complementary approach to enhance patients’ quality of life both in the treatment of TMD and in the rehabilitation during and after head and neck cancer treatments. The rehabilitation of TMD and HNC is too multidimensional to be managed by a single disciplinary approach. While dentistry ensures the structural and functional integrity of the oral and masticatory system, physiotherapy aims to restore the movement, neuromuscular control, and overall physical performance of these structures. Multidisciplinary teamwork involving dentists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, oncologists, and psychologists, followed by early diagnosis and early intervention, creates patient-centered personalized programs that serve as the cornerstone for optimizing functional outcomes and quality of life. The aim of this article is to present, in light of current literature, the role of physiotherapy in dentistry, the physiotherapy methods used, and physiotherapy interventions applied to regions relevant to the field of dentistry.
