Abstract

Aim: This review aims to examine the oral health profiles of children and to evaluate the impact of dental pathologies on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the light of current literature. Material and Methods: Within the scope of the study, pediatric OHRQoL scales, dental treatment needs of children, and the pathophysiological and psychosocial factors involved in this process were analyzed using international databases. Methodological approaches focusing on children’s self-report capacities and parental perceptions were prioritized. Results: Literature data indicate that clinical conditions such as dental caries, traumatic dental injuries, and Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) lead to profound psychosocial deterioration, such as loss of self-esteem, dental anxiety, and social isolation, beyond functional limitations. Scales such as CPQ, ECOHIS, and C-OIDP have been found to be critical in understanding the subjective experiences of children and measuring clinical success following treatment. Conclusion: Oral health in children is not merely a medical necessity but an integral part of holistic child welfare and overall quality of life. To improve the quality of life in the pediatric population, it is essential to develop preventive-oriented and patient-centered multidisciplinary health policies in collaboration with pediatric dentists, child psychologists, and educators.
