Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between multiparous women’s previous breastfeeding experiences, breastfeeding problems, coping practices, and current infant feeding attitudes. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 149 multiparous women who were hospitalized in the postpartum ward and had previous breastfeeding experience. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a Descriptive Information Form, a Breastfeeding Problems Identification Form, and the Infant Feeding Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t test, and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean age of the women was 29.38±5.03 years, and the mean total breastfeeding duration was 24.21±18.29 months. Of the women, 68.46% reported experiencing at least one breastfeeding problem in their previous breastfeeding experience. The most commonly reported problems were nipple crack/pain, perceived insufficient milk supply, and small/inverted nipple. There was no statistically significant difference between women who had and had not experienced previous breastfeeding problems in terms of the total Infant Feeding Attitude Scale score (p>0.05). However, the formula-feeding attitude subscale score was higher among women who had not experienced previous breastfeeding problems (p<0.05). Gestational weight gain was negatively correlated with the formula-feeding attitude subscale score (r=-0.247; p=0.022). Among women who had experienced previous breastfeeding problems, gestational weight gain was negatively correlated with both the total Infant Feeding Attitude Scale score and the formula-feeding attitude subscale score. Conclusion: Although previous breastfeeding problems were common among multiparous women, they did not significantly change overall infant feeding attitudes. However, previous breastfeeding problems and gestational weight gain may be associated with attitudes toward formula feeding. In postpartum care, multiparous women’s previous breastfeeding experiences should be assessed in detail, and individualized, culturally sensitive breastfeeding counseling should be provided.
