Abstract

Obesity has become a major global public health concern, influenced not only by individual choices but also by environmental factors that shape eating behaviors. The term “obesogenic environment” refers to physical, social, economic, and policy-related conditions that promote excessive energy intake by facilitating access to energy-dense foods, widespread food marketing, affordability of unhealthy products, and social norms encouraging overconsumption. Such environmental factors affect both homeostatic and hedonic eating pathways, increasing the likelihood of overeating, rapid eating, mindless eating, and emotional eating. Evidence suggests that portion size, food variety, sensory food cues, and social contexts can increase consumption independently of physiological hunger. This review aims to synthesize current scientific evidence on how obesogenic environments influence eating behaviors and to clarify the environmental mechanisms shaping dietary patterns.
