Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationships among parental smartphone addiction, positive parent–child relationship, and awareness of child abuse, and to evaluate the extent to which parental smartphone addiction and positive parent–child relationship predict awareness of child abuse within the framework of parent–child interaction and Attachment Theory. The study was conducted using a relational survey model with a cross-sectional design, and the study group consisted of 238 parents. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between smartphone addiction and awareness of child abuse (r = .220, p < .01). A negative and significant relationship was found between smartphone addiction and positive parent–child relationship (r = −.160, p < .05), whereas a positive and significant relationship was found between positive parent–child relationship and awareness of child abuse (r = .158, p < .05). The multiple linear regression analysis showed that smartphone addiction and positive parent–child relationship jointly significantly predicted awareness of child abuse, explaining 8.6% of the total variance. The findings indicate that parents’ digital technology use should be considered not only as an individual behavioral pattern but also in relation to family relationships, parenting processes, and awareness of child protection. The findings provide several implications for the development of preventive and protective approaches in the fields of digital parenting and child protection.
