Abstract

Disasters are events that occur unexpectedly in residential areas and adversely affect individuals. There are various types of disasters, one of which is earthquakes. Earthquakes occur as a result of fractures in the Earth’s crust, leading to seismic waves and ground shaking. This natural disaster has biological, social, and psychological impacts. In order to mitigate these psychosocial effects, it is necessary to develop coping strategies in disaster contexts. Coping strategies are taught to individuals in disciplines such as social work and psychology. This study was designed to evaluate individuals’ coping strategies according to demographic variables and to propose solutions within the context of social work in disasters. This study involved 432 individuals using a simple random sampling method. The findings indicate that social support as a coping strategy is used more frequently by women; coping with earthquake stress and religious coping are higher among individuals with primary school education; individuals who lost a relative exhibit lower levels of coping with earthquake-related stress; those residing in tent cities or tents demonstrate higher levels of coping with earthquake stress; and individuals who received psychosocial support show lower levels of coping strategies compared to those who did not receive such support. Based on the research findings, recommendations are proposed within the framework of social work in disaster settings. Based on the research findings, solutions have been proposed within the context of social services in disasters.
