Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the time-varying relationship between the U.S. and Chinese stock markets within a dynamic framework. In this context, daily return series of the S&P 500 index representing the U.S. market and the CSI 300 index representing the Chinese market are employed for the period from January 1, 2010 to April 6, 2025. To capture volatility clustering and time-varying correlation structures commonly observed in financial markets, the Dynamic Conditional Correlation (DCC-GARCH) model proposed by Engle (2002) is utilized. The model is estimated under the multivariate Student-t distribution assumption. The empirical findings indicate that the conditional correlation between the S&P 500 and CSI 300 indices is not constant over time, exhibiting substantial fluctuations across different periods. While the correlation reaches high positive levels during certain episodes, it weakens considerably and even turns negative in other periods. The estimated DCC-GARCH parameters suggest that the correlation process is highly persistent and mean-reverting, implying that the effects of shocks decay gradually over time. Pronounced changes in the correlation structure during periods of heightened global financial uncertainty further confirm the dynamic nature of market interactions. Overall, the results demonstrate that the financial linkage between the U.S. and Chinese stock markets varies over time and provides different risk and return characteristics across periods, highlighting the importance of incorporating time-varying correlations in international portfolio diversification strategies.
