Abstract

Aim: Sleep quality is important for maintaining physiological and psychological health and for enhancing academic performance among university students. This descriptive study aimed to examine sleep quality and factors associated with sleep quality among students of the Faculty of Health Sciences living in dormitories and at home. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with 973 students enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences between December 2023 and June 2024. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). An online questionnaire created via Google Forms was distributed to students. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographic characteristics, and group comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests; one-way analysis of variance was used to compare total PSQI scores across accommodation groups. Results: The mean total PSQI score was 7.27±3.03, indicating poor sleep quality. Overall, 38.2% of the participants were found to have poor sleep quality. Being a first-year student, having an income lower than expenses, sleeping less than 5 hours per day, experiencing sleep problems in the past month, having a family history of sleep problems, and alcohol and cigarette use were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Poor sleep quality was also associated with living in a dormitory and having more than four people sharing the room (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that students’ sleep quality is associated with accommodation conditions as well as certain sociodemographic characteristics, sleep-related factors, and smoking before bedtime. It is recommended to expand informational and motivational interventions that promote sleep hygiene and healthy sleep habits among students at risk of poor sleep quality.
