Abstract
Many policies are being implemented by governments to minimize the effects of climate change and global warming, and one of these is environmental taxes. A carbon tax is defined as an environmental tax that aims to reduce carbon emissions generated by fossil fuel use. Carbon taxes, or carbon emission trading, are believed to play an effective role in ensuring environmental sustainability and reducing emissions. Carbon taxes, particularly those seen globally in developed countries, are a fiscal policy tool used to eliminate negative externalities and ensure sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to discuss the role of carbon taxes in an Islamic economy. At this point, the study discusses the carbon tax, which has no precedent in the Islamic economy, in terms of taxes and principles in the Islamic economy and the principle of maslaha and maqasid al-shariah. According to the findings of the study, carbon taxes can be considered legitimate in an Islamic economy based on the principles of maslaha and maqas al-shariah. However, the fact that carbon taxes are regressive taxes, consequently disrupt income equity, and lack the Islamic economics' emphasis on justice necessitates a rethinking of carbon taxes. A carbon tax that is not designed in accordance with Islamic principles will impose a burden on low-income households and will not be socially acceptable.
