Abstract

This study proposes a new banking model operating with zero real interest, or interest-free, as an alternative to traditional banking models. In the current capitalist economy, interest presents several challenges: Savers demand high interest and investors demand low interest, it can live unwanted cycle between interest and inflation, and high interest rates to become a tool of exploitation over time. In the proposed model, the bank makes funds available at zero real interest, protected against inflation, after collecting them with the promise of protection. To compensate for its intermediary service in connecting fund suppliers and fund demanders, and to maintain its institutional existence, the bank charges a very low premium, depending on the circumstances, from fund demanders or both sides. The religious justification for this proposed model is based on Abu Yusuf's view that "the purchasing power of borrowed value must be protected against inflation." Considering the World Bank's average interest rate and growth rate for the period 1995-2024, it has been observed that positive growth occurs, particularly in upper-middle and high-income countries, even when real interest rates are close to zero or even negative. The study is considered to be quite original because it proposes a banking model in which the purchasing power of borrowed value is continuously preserved, interest does not become a tool of exploitation, faith-based sensitivities are protected, and it is highly feasible.
