Abstract

The existing literature on cultural heritage management centres predominantly on architectural conservation and restoration practices while failing to systematically define the role of industrial design within these processes. This gap creates the conditions for industrial design decisions—spanning exhibition systems, urban furniture, visitor wayfinding, and digital experience design—to be applied inconsistently with conservation principles. To address this gap, the present study proposes an Integrated Design Model that systematically examines the relationship between architectural conservation decisions and industrial design interventions. The model comprises three scalar layers (product, space, and system) and four decision nodes (conservation, reinterpretation, experience, and circularity). The conceptual framework is empirically tested through six cases drawn from Turkey and internationally; the Silahtarağa Power Plant, Neues Museum Berlin, and Zeitz MOCAA are examined as successful integration examples, while the Safranbolu Historic Bazaar serves as a counter-case documenting the consequences of model absence. Findings demonstrate that when industrial design intervention is not co-planned with heritage conservation processes, spatial integrity and visitor experience are significantly compromised. The study offers operational implications for policy makers, architects, and designers, and argues for the necessity of an interdisciplinary decision-making framework in heritage management.
