Abstract

This study explores the capabilities and limitations of wearable mobile lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) systems in the comprehensive three-dimensional documentation of cultural heritage structures and sites. In recent years, advancements in digital surveying and scanning technologies have allowed researchers to overcome the challenges of documenting complex architectural geometries, restricted access areas, and intricate archaeological sites. Wearable mobile Lidar systems enable operators to move freely while capturing high-density 3D point clouds, integrating SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithms to ensure accurate data acquisition even in GPS-denied environments. This research examines the advantages, limitations, and application strategies of wearable lidar, emphasizing practical considerations such as data collection, point cloud processing, and accuracy evaluation. Case studies from Turkey, including Cambazlı Church, Sarisih Caravanserai, and Mufti Abdullah Sıddık Mosque, illustrate the effectiveness of wearable Lidar systems for rapid and precise documentation. The results suggest that wearable Lidar can significantly enhance field efficiency, provide high-resolution 3D data for restoration and conservation planning, and serve as a complementary tool alongside traditional surveying techniques. However, certain technological and methodological improvements remain necessary to fully exploit the potential of this technology.
