Abstract

This study analyzed the causal relationship between Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on panel data for the period 2010-2022 covering the European Union (EU) countries and Turkey. The main purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between FDI and GDP in depth in the context of both regional and economic differences and to reveal the dynamics of the causal relationships between these two variables. In the study, countries were divided into clusters according to the similarities in their economic structures and the analyses were carried out within the framework of these clusters. Clustering aimed to obtain meaningful and specific results. As a result of the similarity analysis of the slopes within the clusters, it was concluded that the clusters had homogeneous slopes. Conducting the study on a cluster basis was a factor that increased the robustness of the results. The analyses carried out to determine the causal relationships revealed striking differences between the two groups. This suggests that the growth-oriented policies of the first cluster countries are more effective in attracting foreign investors. On the other hand, the analyses conducted in the second cluster show that foreign direct investments encourage economic growth and growth is also a factor that increases foreign investments. The findings of the study offer important implications for policy makers. It is emphasized that policies to encourage foreign investments should be designed by taking into account the specific economic characteristics and dynamics of each country. This study aims to provide methodological guidance for future studies by shedding light on regional differences in the relationships between variables.
