Abstract

This study examines the conformity of defence industry companies listed on Borsa İstanbul with the random walk hypothesis, and thus tests for weak-form market efficiency. The sample consists of daily closing prices for the period 2 January 2024–26 May 2026 for six defence companies (ASELS, OTKAR, ALTNY, KATMR, SDTTR, PAPIL) and the benchmark BIST 100 index. The serial independence of returns and the unpredictability of prices were assessed using three complementary test families: unit root (ADF, PP, KPSS), runs, and variance ratio tests. The findings reveal that the benchmark index and the sector’s relatively large and liquid companies (ASELS, OTKAR, KATMR, SDTTR) behave in line with a random walk; returns in these series do not deviate significantly from randomness at any investment horizon. Two small-cap companies deviate from this pattern. In PAPIL, which exhibits the most pronounced deviation, both the runs test and the variance ratio test reject randomness; the variance ratio diverges sharply as the investment horizon lengthens, indicating positive autocorrelation. ALTNY, on the other hand, yields a rejection result in the short term; the price series is stationary at the series level and exhibits positive autocorrelation in the short term. The concentration of deviations in low-liquidity shares is consistent with the market microstructure approach, which suggests that information is reflected more slowly in the prices of these shares. Overall, it has been concluded that weak-form efficiency is largely valid in the defence sector and the benchmark index.
