Abstract
Traditional stone masonry houses located in the Derik district of Mardin province are significant elements of cultural heritage that reflect the historical accumulation of the region, local construction techniques, and an architectural approach adapted to environmental conditions. A large proportion of these structures have been subjected to various types of structural system damage over time due to lack of maintenance, environmental impacts, and inappropriate interventions. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the architectural characteristics of the Ahmet Karahan House one of the traditional dwellings in Derik and the deteriorations observed in its structural system. The study examines the historical and geographical context of Mardin, its stone architecture tradition, and traditional residential typologies, while also evaluating the unique settlement pattern and cultural diversity of the Derik district. The spatial organization, façade arrangements, material usage, and construction techniques of the Ahmet Karahan House were investigated through observational methods. The ashlar and rubble stone masonry on the eastern, southern, and western façades, wooden and iron-framed window openings, niches, and the spatial relationships established with the courtyard were analyzed in detail. In addition, structural deteriorations affecting the load-bearing system such as settlements, moisture-related damage, plaster detachments, surface losses, and soiling were documented. In conclusion, the Ahmet Karahan House stands out as an authentic example representing the traditional architectural character of Derik and as a structure with a high need for conservation. The findings provide valuable data for scientific studies aimed at the preservation and restoration of traditional stone masonry buildings in the region.
