Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of university students’ gender perceptions on their career decision-making self-efficacy. Career decisions constitute one of the critical processes shaping individuals’ lives and are determined not only by individual characteristics but also by social and cultural factors. In this context, gender perception is considered an important determinant influencing individuals’ career preferences and decision-making processes. The study was conducted within the framework of a quantitative research approach using a relational survey model. The sample of the study consists of 438 university students studying at Hitit University, selected through a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using the Gender Roles Attitude Scale and the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as independent samples t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and regression analyses. The findings of the study indicate that there is a positive, low-level, and statistically significant relationship between gender perception and career decision-making self-efficacy. Additionally, gender perception was found to be a significant but limited predictor of career decision-making self-efficacy. Furthermore, while gender perception significantly differs by gender, career decision-making self-efficacy does not show a significant difference based on gender.Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the career decision-making process cannot be explained solely by individual factors, and that gender perception plays a complementary role in this process. Accordingly, it is recommended that career counseling practices incorporate approaches that promote gender equality.
