Abstract

This research aims to reveal the academic development process of the field by examining the temporal and institutional distribution of postgraduate theses produced in the field of conceptual art in Turkey. The study aims to provide a systematic assessment to the art research literature by determining in which periods, at which academic levels, and within which institutions conceptual art has been concentrated in Turkish universities. The research was conducted using the document analysis method within the framework of a qualitative research approach. The data source consisted of postgraduate theses on conceptual art published between 1995 and 2023, found in the Higher Education Council National Thesis Center database. The entire universe was accessed, and no sample selection was made. The findings revealed that a limited number of theses on conceptual art were produced in the 1990s and early 2000s, while a significant and continuous upward trend has been observed since 2018. It was also determined that the theses were concentrated in certain universities and institutes and that master's theses predominated in terms of academic level. In conclusion, the study showed that conceptual art has become an increasingly strong field of academic research in Turkey and has made significant contributions to the institutionalization of contemporary art studies.
