Abstract

This study aims to re-evaluate Herder's position within modern theories and typologies of nationalism by examining his understanding of nationalism within the framework of language, culture, and the consept of folk (Volk). Based on a review of the literature, the findings of this study indicate that, theoretically, Herder, while possessing a “primordialist” perspective, establishes a unique understanding by grounding this approach within a humanist and unifying framework. Typologically, although Herder is generally seen in the literature as a representative of Eastern-bad-cultural-German nationalism, he can be considered more of a representative of Western-good-liberal nationalism.
