Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine whether a trend toward “greening” can be observed in the environmental discourse of the AK Party and the CHP over time and to identify which ideological orientation this trend aligns with in terms of the distinction between reformist “light green,” “shallow ecology,” and “environmentalism” and radical “dark green,” “deep ecology,” and “ecologism”. To this end, this study examines the environmental discourse in the AK Party’s 2002, 2018, and 2023 general election manifestos, as well as the CHP’s 2002 and 2018 general election manifestos and its 2023 joint policy agreement, within the framework of green thought. Accordingly, the manifestos were examined through document review and descriptive analysis along seven thematic axes: natural resource management, the understanding of the relationship between nature and humans, pollution and waste management, the understanding of growth and development, the approach to technology, energy policy, and political strategy. The findings reveal that both parties have undergone a distinct transformation in their environmental discourse over time and exhibit a trend toward “greening.” However, this “greening” suggests a reformist in nature that remains within the framework of “light green,” “shallow ecology,” or “environmentalism,” all of which are approaches that do not envision radical change within the existing political and socio-economic system.
