Abstract
This study examines the formation and development of traditional Chinese dramatic literature within a historical framework, adopting a descriptive and analytical approach. It aims to explain the evolution of this literary tradition into a cohesive aesthetic and performative system trough an analysis of its historical development, intergeneric dynamics, and structural ties to music. The analysis open with a review of major scholarly views on the origins of Chinese theatre, including ritual-based explanations as well as approaches centered on the Chu, Han, Tang, and Song periods, thus outlining the historical context of its emergence. The main focus, however, is the period from the Song-Yuan era—when xiqu began to develop a more systematic structure—through to the end of the Qing dynasty. This trajectory is discussed in three stages: the early phase represented by nanxi and beizaju, followed by chuanqi, and finally the phase of local operas known as difangxi. Rather than treating these forms as a simple chronological sequence, the study argues that they developed through processes of continuity, interaction, and transformation. In this context, nanxi and beizaju laid the groundwork for later developments, chuanqi further refined this tradition, and difangxi represents a new phase shaped by regional dialects and musical diversification. The study also highlights the role of musical systems such as qupai and banshi in shaping both the structure of the text and its performance. From this perspective, traditional Chinese dramatic literature cannot be fully understood apart from its structural relationship with music. The inseparable relationship between traditional Chinese dramatic literature and music thus emerges as a central concern, pointing to a form that gains its full meaning not only through textual composition but also through performance.
