Abstract

This article aims to examine Kiran Desai’s novel The Inheritance of Loss from a postcolonial feminist perspective, discussing the effects of the colonial legacy on identity, social relations, and gender orders in postcolonial societies. Through a parallel narrative drawn between the town of Kalimpong in northeastern India and the United States, the novel makes visible the cultural, political, and economic tensions of the postcolonial world. This study uses qualitative text analysis and close reading methods to evaluate the character representations in the novel within the framework of Edward Said’s approach to representation and discourse, Homi K. Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity and mimicry, and the postcolonial feminist critiques of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Chandra Talpade Mohanty. The analysis shows that the colonial mindset functions not only as a historical legacy but also as a form of power reproduced within individual identities and everyday social relationships. While the character Jemubhai offers an example of colonial subjectivity and cultural alienation, the character Nimi makes visible the experience of subalternity shaped at the intersection of colonial discourse and local patriarchal structures. The characters Sai and Biju reveal the new dimensions that postcolonial identity has acquired in the context of globalization and migration. The article argues that the novel presents not only the postcolonial identity crisis but also the intersection of the colonial legacy with gender hierarchies. In this respect, it aims to broaden the interpretations in the existing literature, which are predominantly shaped around discussions of globalization and diaspora, from a postcolonial feminist perspective.

Özet

Bu makale, Kiran Desai’nin The Inheritance of Loss (Kaybın Türküsü) romanını postkolonyal feminist bir perspektiften incelemeyi, kolonyal mirasın sömürge sonrası toplumlarda kimlik, toplumsal ilişkiler ve toplumsal cinsiyet düzenleri üzerindeki etkilerini tartışmayı amaçlamaktadır. Roman, Hindistan’ın kuzeydoğusundaki Kalimpong kasabası ile Amerika Birleşik Devletleri arasında kurduğu paralel anlatı aracılığıyla postkolonyal dünyanın kültürel, politik ve ekonomik gerilimlerini görünür kılar. Çalışma romanın orijinal İngilizce basımı ve Can Yayınları’ndan Suat Ertüzün’ün Türkçe çevirisiyle birlikte ilerlemiştir.
