Abstract

Chinese language consists of four fundamental components: “Classical Chinese (文言文)”, “Modern Chinese (现代汉语)”, “Traditional Characters (繁體字)”, and “Simplified Characters (简体字)”. Between these four components, certain conceptual, structural, historical, and sociolinguistic differences exist. Learners of Chinese as a foreign language occasionally confuse these four elements, with the distinction between “Classical Chinese” and “traditional characters” often remaining unclear. This study aims to resolve this conceptual confusion by providing a clear definition of these four concepts of the Chinese language while examining them within a comparative framework of language policies, pedagogical approaches, and cultural memory contexts. In the textual analysis section of the study, modern and classical content were written using traditional and simplified characters for comparison, analyzing the same sentence in its four different forms in terms of semantic density, syntactic structure, and textual perception. The results of the study demonstrate that understanding this fourfold linguistic structure as “Language–Script Axes” offers a productive framework for both linguistic clarity and sociocultural analysis. Classical Chinese represents historical depth and cultural accumulation; traditional characters represent cultural continuity and etymological transparency; simplified characters represent modernization and mass literacy goals; and Modern Chinese represents the democratization of language and the prioritization of plain language. Understanding the contexts represented by this fourfold structure is of great importance for analyzing the Chinese language.
