Abstract

The Purpose of the Study: In horror cinema, sound design is not merely an atmospheric element but a fundamental narrative component that structures the experience of tension and fear at sensory and psychological levels. This study aims to examine the aesthetic and sensory functions of sound in horror cinema. It focuses on the effects of silence, noise, atonal music, and Foley usage on narrative structure and audience perception, examining how sound functions as a constitutive element in the production of cinematic fear. Literature Review/Background: The theoretical framework of the study is based on Michel Chion’s sound theories and Laura U. Marks’s sensory/haptic cinema approach. Within this framework, sound is considered not as a secondary element supporting the visual narrative, but as an active component directly participating in the meaning-making processes of the narrative. In addition, the relationship between sound aesthetics and cultural context in horror cinema is discussed comparatively through examples from Eastern and Western cinema. Method: The study employs a qualitative film analysis method. Robert Eggers’s The Witch (2015), Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018), and John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place (2018) were selected as the sample films. Specific scenes in which sound directly structures the narrative were analyzed in detail, focusing on silence, acousmatic sound, low-frequency hums, and anempathetic music. The analyses were conducted within the framework of Chion’s concepts of acousmatic and anempathetic sound, together with Marks’s approach emphasizing bodily and sensory perception. Results: The findings demonstrate that sound design in horror cinema is not limited to creating atmosphere but functions as a central narrative strategy that generates fear at bodily and psychological levels. In particular, silence and low-frequency sounds intensify the sense of tension, while acousmatic and anempathetic sounds strengthen perceptions of uncertainty and threat. Furthermore, the analyses reveal that sound aesthetics are shaped differently according to cultural contexts. Conclusion: The study concludes that sound in horror cinema becomes the subject of the narrative itself and creates an autonomous field of meaning beyond the visual dimension. The sensory and bodily effects of sound intensify the psychological impact of fear on the audience. This research is expected to contribute to theoretical discussions on sound aesthetics in horror cinema and provide a framework for future studies in cinema and sound research. It is also suggested that future studies conduct comparative analyses of sound usage across different cultural contexts.

Çalışma kapsamında Robert Eggers’ın The Witch (2015), Ari Aster’ın Hereditary (2018) ve John Krasinski’nin A Quiet Place (2018) filmleri örneklem olarak seçilmiştir.
