Abstract

This study aimed to examine scientific publications related to the relationship between menopause and sexual health, evaluate them through bibliometric analysis, and identify global publication trends in this field. Data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on July 16, 2025, at 16:24 using the following search terms: “menopause” AND ("sexuality" OR "sexual health" OR "sexual life" OR "sexual function" OR "sexual dysfunction" OR "sexual satisfaction" OR "sexual wellbeing" OR "sexual desire" OR "intimacy" OR "libido" OR "sexual behavior" OR "arousal" OR "orgasm" OR "dyspareunia" OR "vaginal atrophy" OR "vaginal dryness"). The identified publications were analyzed using the VOSviewer software (v1.6.20). The analysis included the distribution of publications by year, influential authors, countries, journals, institutions, and keyword clusters. A total of 3616 publications published between 1980 and 2025 were identified. These studies involved 12,731 authors from 4,223 institutions across 114 countries. The top three countries in terms of publication volume were the United States (n=1188), Italy (n=434), and Australia (n=244). The most productive journal was Menopause – The Journal of The North American Menopause Society (n=315), which was also the most cited (n=14,592). Prominent keywords included “menopause” (n=1438), “genitourinary syndrome of menopause” (n=285), “vulvovaginal atrophy” (n=232), “sexuality” (n=225), and “quality of life” (n=212). The findings indicate that female sexual health in the postmenopausal period has become more visible and that this issue is significant not only for clinical practice but also for public health policy. Additionally, the limited academic output on this topic in developing countries such as Türkiye suggests a need for more local and culturally contextualized research in this field.

Özet

Öz: Bu çalışma, menopoz ve cinsel sağlık ilişkisine yönelik bilimsel yayınları incelemek, bibliyometrik analiz yoluyla değerlendirmek ve bu alandaki küresel yaygın eğilimlerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Veriler, 16 Temmuz 2025 tarihinde saat 16:24’te “Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC)” veri tabanında “menopause” AND "sexuality" OR "sexual health" OR "sexual life" OR "sexual function" OR "sexual dysfunction" OR "sexual satisfaction" OR "sexual wellbeing" OR "sexual desire" OR "intimacy" OR "libido" OR "sexual behavior" OR "arousal" OR "orgasm" OR "dyspareunia" Or "vaginal atrophy" OR "vaginal dryness" anahtar kelimeleri kullanılarak taranmıştır. En fazla yayın yapan dergi “Menopause-The Journal of The North American Menopause Society” (n:315) olurken, en çok atıf alan dergi “Menopause - The Journal of The North American Menopause Society” (n:14592) olmuştur. Anahtar kelime analizinde öne çıkan terimler “menopause” (n:1438), “genitourinary syndrome of menopause” (n:285), “vulvovaginal atrophy” (n:232), “sexuality” (n:225), “quality of life” (n:212) olmuştur.
