Abstract
Illustrated children’s books represent the genre in which animals appear most frequently and influentially within children’s literature. These books demand that both authors and illustrators exercise meticulous pedagogical and ethical judgment, for the visual and narrative images encountered in early childhood profoundly shape a person’s lifelong perception of living beings and the world. Regrettably, scenes depicting animal suffering, objectification, or killing continue to be normalised in many works under the pretext of creative freedom or traditional storytelling conventions. This tendency is particularly evident in fables, fairy tales, and stories in which animals take centre stage; precisely when children are most receptive to empathy, they may internalise interspecies inequality and violence as ordinary. Yet the fact that art carries universal values does not exempt it from ethical accountability. Children’s books are powerful instruments that lay the very foundations of future adults’ understanding of justice, compassion, and responsibility. The present study examines the ways illustrated children’s books address the themes of animal rights and the right to life. Drawing on contemporary examples that portray animals as subjects possessing rights, it aims to reveal the potential of these works to foster empathy, anti-speciesism, and ethical sensitivity in young readers through non-didactic means.
