Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the digital competence development, intercultural collaboration experiences and pedagogical transformation processes of pre-service primary school teachers participating in eTwinning projects. eTwinning is conceptualised as a collaborative learning network that enables pre-service teachers to work with peers from different countries in digital environments and to co-create joint products. The study aims to reveal how this process is reflected in pre-service teachers’ digital literacy, online communication, ethical and safety awareness, and perceptions of professional self confidence. The research was conducted with eight pre-service teachers enrolled in the Department of Primary School Education at the Faculty of Education, Mersin University, who had taken an active role in at least one eTwinning project during the spring semester of the 2024 to 2025 academic year. Participants were selected through criterion sampling. Data were collected through online semi structured interviews and analysed using content analysis. The findings indicate that, over the course of their eTwinning participation, pre-service teachers learned to use digital tools more purposefully and confidently, while strengthening their communication and collaboration skills through online group work and international partnerships. In addition, their teaching approaches were found to be reoriented towards more interactive and student-centred practices, and intercultural interaction was seen to foster tolerance, empathy and a stronger sense of professional confidence. Participants also reported increased sensitivity regarding issues such as data privacy, visual sharing and children’s online safety. Overall, the results suggest that eTwinning projects offer an integrated learning environment that simultaneously supports digital competence, intercultural awareness and pedagogical creativity for pre-service teachers.
