Abstract

This study examines the relationship between how refugee child protagonists are positioned within the narrative and how readers are directed toward particular subject positions in children’s literature. The analysis focuses on Nefes Almadan by Gerard van Gemert and Sen, Ben, Elma Ağacı by Sevim Ak, drawing on the RefugeeCrit theoretical framework, particularly the criteria of “profile of protagonist” and “the role of the reader.” Employing a qualitative research design, the study uses document analysis as its primary method, and the data are examined through thematic content analysis under the categories of “Family-Related Problems,” “Social Attitudes/Racism and Exclusion” and “Health, Housing, and Nutrition Issues.” During the analytical process, representational strategies are evaluated in terms of the character’s narrative function and the interpretive positions offered to readers, while the ideological and ethical dimensions of narrative construction are also discussed. The findings indicate that trauma- and deprivation-centered narrative strategies tend to place the protagonist within a limited space of subjectivity, directing readers toward a more protective stance, whereas representations emphasizing relational competence, symbolic meaning-making, and social interaction encourage more participatory modes of interpretation. The comparative analysis demonstrates that similar thematic concerns can be configured differently depending on how the profile of protagonist and role of the reader are constructed. The study argues that refugee child representations should not be confined to pedagogical or sensitivity-oriented readings alone; rather, considering narrative structure, character construction, and reader positioning together deepens critical analysis. In this respect, the study contributes a RefugeeCrit-informed perspective that highlights the potential for developing approaches integrating narrative form and reader positioning in children’s literature research.
