Abstract

Ulusal Staj Programı is a nationwide initiative that aims to contribute to university students’ career planning processes by bringing together public and private sector employers and university students. This study aims to examine the processes of university students who participated in the Ulusal Staj Programı in terms of adapting to the work environment, establishing professional networks, evaluating their levels of attainment, and developing career awareness. This study, conducted using the thematic analysis method within qualitative research methods, involved semi-structured interviews with 16 students who had worked in various units of different public institutions in Türkiye as part of the National Internship Program. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis with the support of MAXQDA Analytics Pro (24.11.0). The findings indicate that university students were influenced by their social environment during the internship application process and that intrinsic motivation triggered their applications. During the internship process, students were found to have gained professional experience, revised their career perspectives, acquired transferable and technical skills, and attached importance to being taken seriously in a professional sense. In addition, it was determined that students established professional networks during the internship process and needed social support within internship environments. On the other hand, the findings indicate that students prefer to work in larger groups and in bigger cities, are dissatisfied with the working environment conditions and logistical challenges, and want to increase their opportunities to observe and gain experience. In order to optimize the program, it is recommended that internship dates be planned in alignment with the academic calendar and with greater flexibility, that student preferences be strengthened in placement processes, and that pre-application guidance mechanisms be enhanced. In conclusion, it was determined that the program offers significant advantages in several respects, while also having certain aspects that require further development and improvement. Within this framework, the findings were discussed in line with the relevant literature.
