Abstract
This study aims to contribute to the complex and differentiated empirical literature on the causal relationships among foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, and foreign trade. Annual data covering the period 1980–2024 for the Turkish economy are used in the analysis. Within the model, economic growth is considered the dependent variable, while foreign direct investment and exports are included as independent variables. The existence of long-run relationships is investigated through cointegration tests. An error correction model is established to reveal the short- and long-run dynamics, while the direction of causality is tested using the Granger causality analysis. The overall findings reveal that an export-oriented and outward-oriented growth strategy is of critical importance for sustainable economic growth in the Turkish economy.
