Abstract

This research focuses on the trauma and stres disorders experienced by individuals exposed to earthquakes, particularly in the context of another earthquake occurring in a different geographical region of the country. It aims to provide a unique perspective in an area with limited existing literature on thetopic. The study was conducted through a questionnairead ministered to individuals aged 18 and over who had experienced at least one of the 1999 Marmara or Düzce earthquakes, were directly affected by the 23 November 2022 Düzce earthquake, and were also exposed to the 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes through social media and similar channels. The primary objective of the research is to understand the effects of earthquakes that occur in other regions on individuals with prior earthquake experiences and to examine the psychological reflections of these events. Due to a lack of regional studies on the subject, this study aims to fill that gap and offer a valuable contribution. The participants consisted of 206 male and female individuals. The survey was used to reveal how and to what extent an earthquake occurring in a different region of the country psychologically affects people. The results were evaluated based on a survey consisting of 6 main factors and 41 sub-factors. The scale used in the survey includes 6 factors and 41 items, referred to as "Disconnection from Life, Social Health, Psychological Change, Trauma Anxiety, Maturation, Avoidance." Among the 41 sub-factors, items 1, 3, 4, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 34 scored above 3, indicating particular significance. The findings show that earthquakes force individuals into psychological changes and trigger various traumas. By using this scale, the psychological effects on individuals exposed to earthquakes were analyzed. Such studies contribute to supporting individuals with similar traumatic experiences and to developing psychological support services aimed at increasing societal resilience against disasters. The results obtained may guide the design of programs to enhance disaster resilience.
